Project Pipeline

GGC Project Development Stream – as of May 2012

1. Projects: Implementation Phase

Nicaragua - The Rio San Juan

Nicaragua: The Río San Juan Reforestation Project

Overview: A/R project in the Rio San Juan department of South Eastern Nicaragua. GGC has been actively working in the area since 2008, signed its first contracts with landholders in 2011, and planted its first trees in 2012. The project works by creating 35-year partnerships with individual smallholder farmers, converting their degraded pasturelands into agroforestry plantations. A unique production cycle has been developed, combining native timber species, premium quality cacao, and a small proportion of teak, and for the first few years the cash-crops of plantain and beans. The farmers will also receive income through a share of the carbon credits generated.

Total Carbon sequestered: 3 million tCO2e over 2500 hectares and 35 years.

Status: Project has passed feasibility/design and 20 hectares of trial farms are in operation.  All stage 1 pilot farms are being educated through monthly workshops and the monthly newsletter “El Geko Verde” (The Green Gecko) in preparation for launch in November of 2012. It is currently preparing documentation for validation under the VCS and CCBA.

Next steps: CCBA validation; launch of 35 stage 1 pilot farms of 150 hectares in November 2012;  followed by VCS validation and the production of GGC’s first carbon credits.

2. Projects: Finalized Feasibility and Design / Pre-Implementation Phase

Global Green Carbon - Guatemala - Peten High value timber project

Guatemala – Péten High-value Timber Project

Overview: A/R, IFM, SFM involving two components: 1) sustainable FSC harvesting of mahogany and other high value timber species from forest concession within the Maya Biosphere Reserve in northern Guatemala; 2) reforestation of 1000 hectares of deforested land with native timber trees and teak. The project will generate significant social and biodiversity benefits, while providing a continuous, sustainable supply of FSC-certified high-value timber.

Total carbon sequestered: 0.7 million tCO2e

Status: Feasibility, design and financial modeling complete; seeking implementation stage partner finance to take the project through to implementation

Next steps: Secure implementation finance; certification under CCBA, VCS & FSC.

Brazil - Costa Verde

Brazil: The Costa Verde Reforestation Project

Overview: A/R, SFM, agroforestry project of approximately 6,200 hectares on the southern Atlantic coast of Brazil. Costa Verde will provide an ecologically conscious development model for a region in Brazil that is home to the most intact remnants of the highly threatened Atlantic Coastal Forest. GGC has developed a proprietary integrated land-management strategy generating a four-strata revenue stream with a triple bottom line of social, environmental and financial returns.

Total Carbon sequestered: 8,500,000 tCO2e

Status: Project has passed feasibility, but has been on hold due to complications over the recent changes to Brazil's forest code and a lack of clarity over land and carbon ownership rights for foreign corporations. There is also the possibility of combining this project with a REDD+ project, protecting nearby fragments of Atlantic Coastal Forest.

Next Steps: Confirming legal status, and moving towards scecuring implementation funding.

3. Projects: Design Phase

Global Green Carbon in Cameroon

Cameroon: The Dja Biosphere Regional REDD+ Project

Overview: REDD+, ecotourism, A/R, agroforestry encompassing approximately 1,200,000 ha, including 526,000 ha of protected area. The Dja Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, due to its extraordinary biodiversity and the lack of human disturbance over such a large area. However, over the past decade the buffer zone around the Dja has become threatened by unsustainable agriculture, logging and mining activities, and these are now threatening the reserve itself. Already bushmeat hunters are operating far within the Dja, hunting threatened species such as gorillas, chimpanzees and elephants. GGC is partnering with the Center for Tropical Research, UCLA and numerous local NGO's to create an ambitious all-encompassing REDD+ project that will safeguard the ecological resources of this region for future generations.

Total Carbon sequestered: >68 million tCO2e over 50 years

Status: Stage 1 Feasibility Study complete, moving into Stage 2 Feasibility & Design.

Next steps: Signing of a Definitive Agreement with the Republic of Cameroon; Stage 2 & 3 Feasibility Assessments.

4. Projects: Feasibility Phase

Global Green Carbon Nicaragua - Leon and Chinandega Reforestation Project

Nicaragua – Leon & Chinandega Reforestation Project

Overview: A/R, SFM, Efficient stove project in the Leon department of North Western Nicaragua. GGC is in partnership with AFOCNIC, Asociación Forestal de Occidental Nicaragua; the Forestry Association of Western Nicaragua, a local trade association involving nursery owners, foresters and carpenters, and Maya Stoves, efficient stove manufacturer. The 2500 hectares project will combine native timber species with agroforestry, cashew trees, sustainable woodlots, and an efficient stove micro credit program.

Total Carbon sequestered: 2.5 million tCO2e over 30 years

Status: Project has passed pre-feasibility and has undergone initial feasibility and financial modeling; we are currently conducting research into the optimum locations for the initial project phase.

Next steps: Site selection, final design, then a pilot project and validation under VCS, CCBA, and Gold Standard.

Global Green Carbon Ecuador - Misahualli Reforestation - Agroforestry Project

Ecuador – Misahualli Reforestation-Agroforestry Project

Overview: A/R project in the Napo Province of Ecuador in the Amazon Rainforest. Andean Carbon, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Global Green Carbon, is undergoing assessments of converting 5,000 hectares of degraded and deforested land to productive land through native species reforestation, Balsa wood and Ecuadorian National cacao, some of the finest in the world. The project is structured as joint venture partnerships with smallholder farmers creating integrated land management strategies over a 35-year term.

Total Carbon sequestered: 6 million tCO2e

Status: Pre-feasibility complete; now in the project feasibility and financial modeling phase.

Next Steps: Land tenure assessments; mapping; JV Contract signing

Kenya - Huri Hills

Kenya: The Huri Hills Reforestation Project

Overview: A/R project using native species, agroforestry, silvopasture, non-timber forest products, efficient stoves. Project size is approximately 3000 ha, scalable to >100,000 ha. GGC is partnering with Food for the Hungry and the Paradigm Project.

Total Carbon sequestered: 1.2 million tCO2e

Status: Pre-feasibility complete; project feasibility and financial modeling being revisited pending the stabilization of the region after the recent drought and refugee crisis, and work is needed on defining the relationships with partners and local communities.

Next steps: CCBA, VCS, and Gold Standard Validation
