The Rio San Juan Reforestation Project consists of a community based reforestation effort within the Rio San Juan region of Southeastern Nicaragua. The project groups small-holder landowners into a reforestation and agroforestry effort utilizing predominantly native species in regions where infrastructure is low and opportunities for economic development are few.
- Project Timeline: Project Phase 1 (Feasibility & Design) start date November 2009, expected to run for an initial period of 35 years
- Project Type: Reforestation (A/R) project on degraded/deforested land, with cacao agroforestry and native bamboo as additional revenue streams
- Land Tenure: Community and individually tenured
- Alliances: Giz, ADA
- Tree Species: The project will use a mix of native timber species and attempt to regain the natural diversity of original forest; a small proportion of the non-invaisive exotic teak will also be grown
- Agroforestry species: The project will grow high-quality ‘fine’ cacao as an agroforestry species, and additionally a small proportion of the land will be planted with native bamboos rather than timber trees.
- Project Size: 2,500 hectares
- Revenue: Carbon Credits, Management Fees
- Certifications Standards: CCBS (project design and co-benefits), VCS (carbon), FSC (timber)
