The Guyallabamba Watershed Reforestation Project is located within the surrounding montane areas around Ecuador’s capital city of Quito. The project represents an opportunity to combine carbon revenue with extraordinary social and environmental benefits, and is most suited for an institution requiring credits for Corporate Social Responsibility purposes.

The project represents the reforestation of degraded Paramo ecosystems, at an altitude of >12,000ft, with purely indigenous species. The primary purpose of reforestation is to restore and maintain a healthy watershed for the provision of clean water supply to the urban areas.

The project will occur on community owned land, providing a source of employment as well as the development of microenterprise for the El Carmen community. The initial pilot will cover an area of 1,000ha, but the initiative has the potential to be scaled up to 5,000ha or more.

  • Project Timeline:  Project Phase 1 (Feasibility & Design) start date January 2009, expected to run for an initial period of 25 years
  • Project Type: Reforestation (A/R) project on degraded land
  • Land Tenure: Land owners both community tenured (60%) and private (40%)
  • Tree Species: The project will use a mix of native species (Polylepis) and attempt to regain the natural diversity of original forest
  • Project Size:  1,000 hectares
  • Revenue:  Carbon Credits, Management Fees
  • Certifications Standards:  CCBS (project design and co-benefits), VCS (carbon)
  • Expected Emissions Removal:  Conservative estimations approximate total GHG removals to equate to 440 tCO2e/ha over the project lifetime
  • Total GHG Gas Emissions Removal:  1,000 hectares approximately440,000 tCO2e
