Washington, D.C. – July 11th, 2011 – Global Green Carbon Corporation (“Global Green Carbon”, “GGC” or the “Company”) announced today Director of Carbon Forestry Edward Mitchard participated in a limited invitee collaboration called the “Community Forest Monitoring Working Group” in Washington D.C. held by Google.org, Google’s charitable arm.
Google.org summoned the group to collaborate on developing a simple software package using Open Data Kit (ODK), an open source suite of software tools. The goal is to create a smartphone app that could be used by community members to monitor forestry projects. The hope for this application is that it could greatly reduce the costs and improve the accuracy of monitoring community oriented carbon forestry projects such as REDD+.
Mr. Mitchard was asked to participate based on his expertise in satellite data and work integrating ground measurements with satellite images.
"This workshop represents a fantastic opportunity for a wide range of groups involved in projects that aim to reduce tropical deforestation and degradation to work together to produce an effective community monitoring solution. We at Global Green Carbon believe that projects will only be effective if monitoring is accurate and timely, and community-level monitoring is a key component of this. We are considering using the Open Data Kit in monitoring our projects, and are delighted to have this opportunity to assist in its development and integration with other monitoring methodologies,'” stated Ed Mitchard, Director of Carbon Forestry, GGC.
